When Is The Best Time To Exercise?

I like to tell my clients that the best time of the day to work out is the time of day that they are most likely to actually work out.

If you are not a morning person and will never consistently wake up to fit your exercise in, then morning is not a good time for you. On the other hand, if, as the day goes on, you usually encounter distraction after distraction, then perhaps a morning workout is your ideal time.

There have been studies done as to what is the best time. Some scientists believe the ideal time for your body is in the afternoon (between 2-6 pm) when your body temperature is usually highest, your muscles are looser and flexibility peaks.

A study from the Mollen Clinic in Phoenix US, however, reported that after one year 75% of morning exercisers were still sticking to their workouts as opposed to only 25% of evening exercisers.

My advice is to take a good look at your daily and weekly routine and determine what is most convenient for you. Personally, morning workouts are my choice. As a working mother, "later" usually turns into "never" unless I get it done in the morning.

The bottom line is whether you exercise 20 minutes in the morning, 20 minutes over your lunch hour or 20 minutes before bed, you are getting 20 minutes of movement you otherwise wouldn't have. Whichever time you choose, keep it up!
