Recognition as Australia's Fitness Centre of the Year is an accolade that is not easy to achieve. The 2006 award by the Australian Fitness Network, to Brisbane's Green Apple Wellness Centre followed earlier recognition of the Centre as Fitness Queensland's Fitness Facility of the Year in 2006.

While this year may have been a time of awards, the success of the Green Apple Wellness Centre has been built up over 28 years of operation in the Brisbane suburb of Bald Hills.

The owner/manager of the Centre, Victoria Gill, began her fitness career almost thirty years ago when, as the mother of two young children, she decided to return to the workforce. A qualified gymnastics instructor, during her university years, Victoria answered an advertisement for a gym instructor, and despite not being impressed by what she observed at the gym, was prevailed upon to take the job. There was no training course available in Queensland at that time, so when the opportunity arose Victoria travelled to New South Wales to gain some qualifications. On her return, she purchased the gym as a female-only business (the men moved out), and changed the name to Green Apple Gymnasium. From a medical background, (three of Victoria's brothers followed their father into medicine), Victoria took a clinical approach to strength training. She developed instruction programs for her staff and devised exercises and weight programs targeting the individual needs of her clients. Soon her female members were asking to bring along their partners and husbands, so the Green Apple expanded to accept both men and women.

Despite having achieved a remarkable level of personal fitness, Victoria insists that she is not a 'gym junkie'. Her vision has always been to provide an environment where men and women with no particular sporting prowess can exercise their bodies safely and enjoy the process of becoming fitter and healthier, In addition to their individual fitness programs, members can choose to participate in a wide range of exercise classes. The centre offers aerobics, yoga, Pilates, aqua aerobics, Urban Rebounding, step and fitball classes, to mention just a few. There are regular education evenings where guest speakers instruct members on issues such as nutrition, falls prevention and ageing. Victoria studied to become a Remedial Massage Therapist and now has a team of three therapists able to offer this service to members who choose to support their gym work with corrective massage.

Over time Green Apple Gym evolved into Green Apple Gym and Wellness Centre and, three years ago, into the Green Apple Wellness Centre. An early Australian devotee of US wellness guru Dr Kenneth Cooper, the name changes, according to Victoria, encapsulated a belief that the Centre offers fitness and health outcomes rather than just exercise.First influenced by Cooper's writings and seminars in the early 1990's Victoria has provided health programmes focussing on good health for over 20 years but concedes that the market has only been ready to embrace the concept of wellness in the last few years.

Today, the Green Apple clientele ranges in age from 6 to 85 years and, not only does Victoria retain some of her original staff but also many loyal members who signed on in those early years. There is an informal, friendly atmosphere at the gym, and members are served by a dedicated, highly qualified staff.

The Green Apple's social club fills an important role in the life of many senior members. Organised weekend bus trips, morning teas and a range of other activities develop a sense of belonging, friendships and social contacts for participants.

The different philosophy underpinning Victoria Gill's business at the Green Apple Wellness Centre has resulted in a non-toxic workplace with very little staff turnover and a very loyal clientele. The Centre recently won the Quest Business Achievers Award for the fifth time.
